Given the complex relationships among all three of the earth's primary resources -- the nexus of food, energy and water -- meeting these future demands will require thinking in terms of systems, not silos. It will take collaborative approaches that embrace rather than battle natural processes. And it will mean new technologies and approaches to everything from bio-fuels to desalination to meet the needs of the world population.
The mudP1E lab (pronounced mudpie) was created in 2003 to start again with new science thinking only using "daylight" not sunlight as the primary fuel source to look at advanced nanotechnology applications in Food, Energy and Water resouce technologies. Daylight is available 365 days of the year everywhere in the world, sunlight is not. Daylight energy is the only sustainable future which can include everyone equally.
It has taken us 10 years to start perfecting some breakthrough technologies that will change the way we become sustainable but they are available now and more will follow; and not just from us.

A photon is a discrete bundle (or quantum) of electromagnetic (or light) energy. Photons are always in motion and, in a vacuum, have a constant speed of light to all observers, at the vacuum speed of light (more commonly just called the speed of light) of c = 2.998 x 108 m/s.
In the 1800s, however, the wave properties of light (by which we mean electromagnetic radiation in general) became glaringly obvious and scientists had essentially thrown the particle theory of light out the window. It wasn't until Albert Einstein explained the photoelectric effect and realized that light energy had to be quantized that the particle theory returned.
The photon is an elementary particle, despite the fact that it has no mass. It cannot decay on its own, although the energy of the photon can transfer (or be created) upon interaction with other particles. Photons are electrically neutral and are one of the rare particles that are identical to their antiparticle, the anti photon.
Photons behave in some ways like particles, little bits of stuff, and in other ways like waves. It's not just visible sunlight that is made of photons, but a lot of other kinds of waves like radio waves, television broadcasts, x-rays, and the ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) rays that give you sunburns. The difference between light and these other kinds of waves depends on the size of the wave - the wavelength. Very short waves are x-rays and ultraviolet rays, that cause sunburn. Visible light like sunlight is made of medium-length waves. Radio and television waves are very long waves. But all of these rays are made of photons.
If a photon moves in short wavelengths, like x-rays or ultraviolet rays, then that photon has more energy. That's why you have to be careful how much x-ray radiation or UV rays you get, or you'll get radiation sickness or a sunburn. If the wavelength is longer, then that photon will have less energy - that's why it's not dangerous to stand in the way of radio or television broadcasts.

Older technologies such as solar thermal only use the heat element of light which is only available when the sun is shining and is only a medium wavelength; thus they are very inefficient. When these old technologies were created in the 1800's, there would have been little knowledge of advanced Physics in terms of light and Photons as most of this science was not understood until the 1900's mainly involving Max Planck and Einstein's work from 1905 until he presented his general theory of relativity in 1927..
The Theoretical Carnot Limit from 1820's which is the religion of heat pumps has already been breached by many with the latest being in 2014 and by "several time"s more efficiency by research at the University of Mainz in Germany using Nanotechnology. The reality is that if you are putting Heat Pumps and Solar Hot Water in your projects, you are installing technology that is based on science knowledge from the 1800's which has already been surpassed.
