It is daunting to consider that a home heating bill today whether fuelled by gas, electricity or home heating oil could be largely avoided by switching to light as the main fuel source for your heating, hot water & electricity.

 

In this multi year case study about a typical existing Irish home (pre-2006), the home is slightly bigger than 2,200 sq. ft. and has a prior energy rating of D2. It is a concrete block house with air vents in the walls, probably the exact same type of construction as a lot of homes in UK & Ireland. The upgrade project was completed in 2009 and this case study is the result of that upgraded project which is having its data recorded annually.

 

This home has experienced an accumulated saving of in oil & electricity of €26,380 over 7 years to date with a COP average of 1:630 in 2015. In 2016, the homeowner has only spent €190 on heating oil up to July 19th. The winter of 2015/2016 has been a great year for HONE Systems in Ireland as the winter was milder than normal so HONE savings are having a record year.

 

Specifications on the design:

• 12 standard and double radiators with 300L hot water cylinder.

• Cavity walls pumped and attic insulation 100mm. (attic still be upgraded)

• Full remote control and monitoring system.

• HONE system reports house temperature to all devices including phones.

This home is heated by HONE ONLY with Boiler backup and a HONE Gen 4 Thermal System.

The home is a normal family home occupied and used 24 hours a day, has no electric shower or immersion and fireplaces have been sealed.

Note: Due to the drop in oil prices in 2015, it is not unusual to see extra oil being carried over into 2016 and hence high savings numbers to date in 2016. The average annual saving in heating oil in this home is 77.9% over the last 5 years. The savings amount is based on its original heating oil consumption before HONE was installed. This home has no other form of heating except its HONE system and its backup oil boiler.

2010 timber frame home 2 story with oil boiler and radiators...

Building a new home has never been more complicated. You have the usual design considerations, such as where the rooms go, how big and how many. Today we now have additional considerations such as meeting new and strict building energy codes. Your design will also be tested to meet building energy carbon requirements, which are getting stricter each year.

 

So many individuals and couples have to sit down and wade through the myriad of information coming from many directions with regards their new home and what they should do to heat it.

 

In this case study about a new build home, the home is slightly bigger than 2,100 sq. ft. and built to an energy rating of B1, fully sealed timber frame with whole house heat ventilation recovery system, all pretty standard since 2008 to meet new building fabric energy ratings. The project was completed in 2010 and this case study is the result of that new build project after 3 years of operation and what the homeowner learnt in that process.

 

Currently in 2016, Ireland has an energy requirement of A3 and it will move to A2 soon and HONE can deliver these results.

Note: The savings are lower in a new build low energy home as the home uses less energy, hence savings are also lower. The HONE system required is much smaller and greatly reduced cost when installed in a new build and hence the payback period is still short.

Concrete block home 2 story with gas boiler and radiators...

This retrofit project in St Truiden in the Belgian provinse of Limburg (near Brussels). Completed in February 2015. The building is constructed to 1980 standards.

 

In this case study about an existing home, the home is slightly bigger than 1,500 sq. ft. with regular high temperature radiators.

 

Specifications on the design:

• HONE/GAS combination system. (HONE Daylight is the primary heat source, gas boiler as backup when needed)

• Standard high temperature radiators with 300L hot water cylinder.

• Insulation standards from 1980, otherwise a normal home in all regards.

• Full remote control and monitoring system.

Musgrave Park Hospital - NHS

Immediate 80% saving in gas consumption

In 2014, one of the biggest trusts in the UK's National Health Service with over 20,000 staff, decided to convert one of their key campus care buildings to HONE Daylight Heating technology. HONE is a Nanotechnology designed to significantly reduce oil & gas consumption in Heating & Cooling systems. These commercial projects were considered pilot projects and four "space heating" systems were installed and metered to validate that HONE technology worked and to what extent. The heating loads were originally designed with a Heat Pump/Gas and Solar Thermal which have been removed. The HONE/Gas hybrid systems were commissioned at the end of June 2014 and with 6 month RHI metering results are a huge success. The Belfast Trust NHS has one of the largest metering systems in western europe so results are very sophisticated and detailed. The full annual SAP performance calculations (which are based on solar thermal models) were delivered after only 8 weeks of production.

A major advantage of HONE in these projects was that it is completely compatible with existing radiator systems so no disruption to Hospital services was needed to complete the upgrade. It also allowed the project to keep natural gas but still make significant carbon and cost savings.

Musgrave Park Hospital

Four custom designed HONE daylight "space district heating system was developed to integrate with this complex project. As most Hospital and Healthcare projects, the requirement for heating and hot water district services is a very large 365 day/24 hour requirement every day of the year.

Summary Results to date

This is a very brief summary of the results of the system to date. The first months COP was a staggering 1:221 (includes commissioning period) and an 80% saving in metered natural gas.

- Renewable Heat Incentive

These HONE systems are all RHI earning systems and are performing with high results. The COP measured is input kWhr electrical consumption versus the OFGEM metered direct heat output in kWhrs of the systems. The additional savings benefit of boiler and system efficiency gains has not been included.

SAP - EPC - EPBD - kWhr metered performance

The metered RHI output from this project has delivered the highest metered RHI output in the UK at 3.35 times SAP. This site has produced 550.52 kWhrs/m2/year performance in a space heating application which is a record for this type of technology in this location.

This equates to a system efficiency of 54.67% which means that the Surface Power HONE system converted 54.67% of all available annual Daylight at the location into Metered energy as certified by the UK Government's RHI tariff metering program administered by OFGEM.

This means that HONE is confirmed as the highest performing Daylight harvesting technology in the world.
